In the late 1960s, on the heels of the New York Pop Art Movement, a renegade group of Venice Beach and Santa Monica-based painters, sculptors and photographers began to implement advancing technology and unusual materials into their gusty artistic creations. The maverick attitudes and formidable skills of the artist combined with Southern California’s free expressionism and “hang loose vibe” to give birth to the L.A. School of Art. Also, known as the Light and Space Movement, the local art experiment exploded and grabbed headlines around the world.
Works by Dale Chihuly, Jim Dine, Frank Stella, and Dennis Hopper take command of the grand lobby experience and each Azzurra’s resident floors will be reinterpreted as galleries to display and show case individual artists and their work. With the King of Pop, Andy Warhol, holding court on Azzurra’s Penthouse level, Azzurra’s “artists in residence: are impressive.
Julie Cline Fine Art Services was retained to curate the most prestigious collection of contemporary art that will be dis-played throughout Azzurra. These collected works pay tribute to one of the most influential art scenes to originate in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s and is often referred to as the “LA School of Art.” This vibrant epicenter, an eclectic vision of East heads West and North comes South, attracted major artist to LA from New York, San Francisco, London and Paris in droves to live, work and create amid the California sun and surf.
The bold paintings and works on paper, pioneering sculpture and inventive photography of the prestigious Azzurra Art Collection celebrate the Los Angeles/Venice Art Scene of the 1960's to 1970's. More than 150 pieces-from Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha to Billy Al Bengston and Roy Lichtenstein-grace Azzurra's lobby, gathering spaces and public areas. Each residential level is dedicated to a different artist; every floor transformed into its own private and intimate gallery.
